He received an AAS from the Thompson School of Applied Sciences at UNH in Civil Technology/Surveying, began working in surveying in 1984, has been licensed since 1990, and has been self-employed since founding Joseph M. Wichert LLS in 1991. He serves as a member of the New Hampshire Board of Licensure for Land Surveyors and personally oversees client projects.

He is a licensed land surveyor and Designer of Subsurface Disposal Systems in New Hampshire and holds a BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1985).
