Civil Engineering

Land Surveying

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Surveying
Aerial photogrammetric surveys using FAA-certified drone operators and high-resolution imagery with GPS ground control. Results include digital surface models, ortho-rectified aerial images, stockpile volume surveys, and topographic surveys. UAS surveying is advantageous for inaccessible or unsafe terrain and for efficiently mapping large areas.
Hydrogeology and Water Resources
Water supply development, water rights consulting, and resource characterization led by a registered Professional Geologist with over 30 years of experience. Norbert Hackl
President & Senior Land Surveyor

Norbert Hackl is the President and Founding Principal at Alpine Surveying & Engineering. Originally from Vienna, Austria, he holds a First Diploma in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Agriculture and Rural Engineering in Vienna, and completed additional coursework at Montana State University. He has over 25 years of land surveying experience and has operated the business since 2002. Licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in Montana since 2001, Hackl is a long-standing member of the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors (MARLS) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors. He served as President of the MARLS South Central Chapter from 2019 to 2023 and sits on the Gallatin County Planning and Zoning Commission.

Ethan Cote is Vice President and the civil team leader at Alpine Surveying & Engineering. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering with a minor in Environmental Conservation from the University of New Hampshire and has over 11 years of civil engineering experience. Cote previously founded White Mountain Engineering in 2022 and merged that practice with Alpine in 2024 to expand service offerings. He has been working as a civil engineer in Bozeman since 2016.

Registered as a Professional Geologist in Idaho, Michalek advises clients on strategic water planning, agency negotiations, and water rights applications for commercial, municipal, and agricultural users. He is a Past President of the Montana Chapter of the American Water Resources Association.
